Muscle testing is a methodology or procedure that uses the strength variations of a muscle or muscle group in a subject's body to gather information about their health. It is often used to determine the body's nutritional requirements and can be applied to find out if a food, supplement, cosmetic, or other substance is beneficial or detrimental to an individual. Muscle testing can also be used to tap into the subconscious mind to answer questions about physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This practice is also referred to as muscle response testing or applied kinesiology. Various certifications are available in this field, such as the International College of Applied Kinesiology's 100-hour Certification Course and the Biochemical Kinesiology Certification Program.

What You'll Learn

Manual muscle testing methods
Muscle testing is a non-invasive method that can be used to determine the underlying causes of ailments, discomfort, nutritional needs, and trapped emotions. It is a reliable tool to analyse what the body needs and identify the root cause of negative symptoms.
Manual muscle testing (MMT) is a highly reliable method for assessing strength using a standardised clinical examination. MMT is often used for survivors of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and critically ill patients who exhibit generalised weakness, reduced exercise tolerance, and persistent nerve and muscle impairments.
There are two different methods for performing MMT:
- Resistance is applied to the body part at the end of its available range of motion. This is called the break test because the patient must try to prevent the therapist from "breaking" the muscle hold.
- Resistance is applied through the available range of motion. This method requires skill and experience and is not recommended.
During MMT, each muscle group is tested bilaterally. The examiner applies resistance or palpates the muscle or tendon for contraction while the other hand stabilises the extremity being tested. If the patient does not understand the instructions or is not applying maximum effort, the test is repeated.
The patient is positioned to allow full movement of the joint against gravity, and the examiner demonstrates the desired movement. The patient then attempts to repeat the movement, and the examiner applies resistance if the patient can move through the desired range of motion. Muscle strength is then graded based on the patient's ability to tolerate resistance.
Additionally, muscle strength testing using a handheld dynamometer is less commonly used but provides the advantage of ratio scale measurements.

Muscle testing training
Muscle testing is a methodology or procedure that uses the strength variations of a muscle or muscle group to gather information about a person's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is a non-invasive method that can help determine the underlying causes of ailments, discomfort, and nutritional needs.
There are also more comprehensive training programs available, such as the International College of Applied Kinesiology's 100-hour Certification Course, which covers Applied Kinesiology and Manual Muscle Testing. This course equips practitioners with the knowledge and skills to evaluate and address their patients' health concerns more effectively.
Additionally, there are specialized certification programs like the Biochemical Kinesiology Certification Program, which consists of twenty-four online classes covering various topics such as testing for heavy metals, identifying organ stress, working with nutritional test kits, and helping clients overcome addictions to substances or foods.
Some programs also offer convenience by providing online courses that can be accessed from anywhere, such as the Muscle Testing For Your Health online course, which is approximately 3 hours long and is split into 3 video lessons.
Overall, muscle testing training can provide valuable insights into the complex interplay between the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of health and healing, empowering practitioners with tools to better serve their clients' needs.

It is often used to determine the body's nutritional requirements and can be used to identify if a substance is likely to be beneficial or detrimental to the person being tested.
Practitioners may become certified in Applied Kinesiology, which is the scientific study of human movement, performance, and function. This can include the study of Biochemical Kinesiology, which focuses on the chemical processes and reactions involved in physical activity.
To become a certified muscle testing practitioner, one can take a variety of courses offered by different institutions. These include the International College of Applied Kinesiology's 100-hour Certification Course, as well as the Kinesiology Institute's Biochemical Kinesiology Certification Program, which consists of 24 online classes.
Additionally, the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation offers a Muscle Testing for Your Health online course, which is approximately 3 hours long and is taught by David Getoff, a Board Certified Traditional Naturopath and expert in muscle testing. Quantum Muscle Testing (QMT) also provides basic and advanced courses, both in-person and online, to educate practitioners from all fields of healthcare and wellness.

Applied kinesiology
Muscle testing, also known as applied kinesiology (AK) or manual muscle testing (MMT), is an alternative medicine practice. It is based on the idea that "for every action in nature, there is an equal and opposite reaction", as stated in Sir Isaac Newton's Laws of Motion. This concept is applied to the human body, suggesting that any internal issues would be accompanied by related muscle weakness.
Through applied kinesiology, practitioners can gain insights into the functioning of various bodily systems. If a muscle tests as strong, it suggests that the associated organ is functioning optimally. Conversely, a weak muscle test result may indicate a problem in the related organ or gland.
While applied kinesiology has shown promise in diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders, it is important to note that the medical community has largely rejected it as a diagnostic tool for other systems of the body. It is recommended that AK be used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods, such as physical exams, health histories, lab testing, and X-rays.

Muscle testing certification courses
Muscle testing is a technique used to determine the root cause of negative symptoms and ailments by tapping into the subconscious mind. It is a non-invasive method that can be used to assess an individual's physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Several institutions offer muscle testing certification courses that provide in-depth knowledge and practical skills in this field. One example is the International College of Applied Kinesiology, which offers a 100-hour certification course in muscle testing. This course likely covers the fundamental concepts and applications of muscle testing, including the history, scientific rationale, and practical implementation in healthcare practices.
Additionally, Dr. Whitney Donohue, a Naturopathic Physician and Professional Applied Kinesiologist, offers courses and mentorship in muscle testing. Her courses, such as Quantum Muscle Testing (QMT), are designed for practitioners from various fields of healthcare and wellness. QMT focuses on educating participants about the science behind manual muscle testing, proper testing procedures, correct terminology, and addressing misconceptions.
Another option is the Discover Healing platform, which provides resources and courses related to muscle testing. They offer a free introductory course that covers the basics of muscle testing and how to become a practitioner. Discover Healing also mentions The Emotion Code, a methodology developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson, which utilizes muscle testing to identify and release emotional baggage. Furthermore, Dr. Nelson's The Body Code is a self-study course on energy healing that incorporates muscle testing as a tool for identifying and addressing bodily imbalances.
These certification courses empower individuals to become practitioners and apply muscle testing techniques in their respective fields, enhancing their ability to evaluate and treat patients effectively.
