This tract is a strong fibrous tissue that runs along the lateral thigh to the tibia and fibula. The lateral rotator group

The piriformis is a long muscle that originates on the anterior surface of the lateral process of the sacrum and the gluteal surface of the ilium at the margin of the greater sciatic notch. It inserts onto the superior border of the greater trochanter of the femur. The piriformis is similar to the gemellus muscles in that it also rotates the hip laterally. Additionally, if the thigh is flexed, the piriformis assists in abducting it.

The obturator externus originates on the external surface of the obturator membrane and the margins of the obturator foramen, while the obturator internus originates on the inner surface of the obturator foramen and the surfaces of the surrounding bones. The adductor group

There are four primary muscles in the adductor group: adductor longus, adductor brevis, adductor magnus, and gracilis. These muscles work together to pull the thigh towards or past the body's median plane, also known as the central axis. Adductor magnus is the largest muscle in this group and consists of two parts: the adductor part and the ischiocondylar (hamstring) part. Adductor brevis, positioned in front of adductor magnus and behind adductor longus, is the shortest muscle in this group.

The adductor muscles originate from the pubis and ischium bones and primarily insert onto the medial posterior surface of the femur. Adductor longus, a triangular muscle, originates from the anterior surface of the pubis bone and inserts onto the middle third of the linea aspera. It contributes to the flexion of the extended thigh and the extension of the flexed thigh. Adductor brevis, also triangular, has fibres that originate from the lateral part of the body and inferior ramus of the pubis, inserting onto the superior.

Gracilis is the most medial and superficial muscle of the group, crossing both the hip and knee joints. It extends from the body of the pubis and ischiopubic ramus to the medial surface of the proximal tibia. Pectineus, a short and quadrangular muscle, is also part of the adductor group, extending from the pubis to the line between the lesser trochanter of the femur and the upper part of the linea aspera. It is the only adductor muscle innervated by the femoral nerve, while the others are innervated by the obturator nerve.

The iliopsoas group

The iliopsoas muscle joins the femur at the lesser trochanter. It is the strongest flexor of the hip. The psoas major originates along the outer surfaces of the vertebral bodies of T12 and L1–L3 and their associated intervertebral discs. The iliacus originates in the iliac fossa of the pelvis. The psoas major unites with the iliacus at the level of the inguinal ligament. The obturator nerve also passes through the muscle, which is responsible for the sensory innervation of the skin of the medial aspect of the thigh.

The iliopsoas muscle is supplied by the lumbar spinal nerves L1–L3 (psoas) and parts of the femoral nerve (iliacus). The psoas major is innervated by direct branches of the anterior rami of the lumbar plexus at the levels of L1–L3, while the iliacus is innervated by the femoral nerve (which is composed of nerves from the anterior rami of L2–L4).
